Fishing Report: Black Moshanon Stream

Brook trout caught on a home made spinner

Trout were the target species this Saturday as we headed for the woods of central Pennsylvania. The section of the stream we fished was fairly remote and required some serious hiking. The scenery was great and the fishing was even better. We landed numerous brook trout on a couple different lures.

Most trout fell prey to home made spinners including a monster 21"” palomino trout caught by one of our party. Due to some technical difficulty with my digital camera we have no proof of this one. I guess we'’ll just have to call it another "“fish story"”.

The in-line spinners were cast up stream at about a 10 o'’clock angle then retrieved at a moderate to fast speed downstream. We cast to targets such as boulders, riffle sections, and various current breaks.

As an experiment I tied on a Gitzit minnow pattern tube. This didn'’t work as well as our in-lines but I was able to land five brookies with the bait. The fish spit the bait rather quickly so I missed about 50% of the fish that hit the Gitzit.

Pattern
We did not attempt to establish a pattern. We just covered water throwing to likely fish holding spots. As is turned out, there were many of them.

Weather
Overcast. Air temps low 70'’s.

Water Conditions
Lower than usual for this time of year. More than four feet of visibility.
