Fishing Report: Cameron County Creeks
Smallmouth bass caught on a five inch Yum Dinger
What an absolutely fantastic day on the water! We had lots of sun and warm temperatures as we made our way north into Cameron County to fish some very sceinic smallmouth waters. The streams we fished are not capable of yielding large numbers but have a good supply of chunky smallmouth. Our crew consisted of myself, an old fishing buddy of mine, my son, and one of his cronies. All told we landed 15 smallmouth bass covering two separate creeks.
We used a variety of soft plastic baits to catch our fish. Yum Dingers were by far the best producer of the day with sluggo's picking up a couple of fish. The key was fishing the baits S-L-O-W. Yum Dingers where most effective when dragged slowly on the bottom with frequent pauses. As an added enticement we would intermittently "pop" them off the bottom with a very light snap of the wrist. Sluggo's were most effective using a "dead sticking" technique with intermittent wrist snaps timed very far apart to jump the bait of the bottom.
Pattern
No consistent patter was established. We primarily attempted to cover a lot of water casting to different types of structure such as, rocks, logs, downed trees, and ledges. We caught fish from each of these types of structure. Most fish where caught in at least three feet of water.
Weather
Sunny with air temps in the mid 70's. Very windy at times. We did have one thunderstorm role through but it did not last long.
Water Conditions
Water temps around 60 degrees. Visibility was more than four feet. Water levels pretty much normal for this time of year.
